Lumbergame - before current version (Alpha 6)
So I've actually been working on this game for quite a while now. I originally started it as a joke game, but I eventually had a bit too much fun in Unreal Engine, and it turned out pretty well, so I'm continuing to work on it. The current version (as of this post) is (supposedly) Alpha 0.6. So this is a "devlog", that means I can just talk about stuff right? Okay!
So I originally intended this game to be just a short experience, but then I had the idea of making an industrial simulator. My thought was basically Satisfactory but much more simpler (and dumber). So after making the environment, and the basic wood cutting system, I added the "Construction Table". It was intended to be much more limited, such as you only had one, and you constantly had to return to it to build. And then I added some buildings, such as a "Lumber Farm", which has no reason to exist, but I think is quite funny. Then, to make the industry more dynamic, I added the conveyor belt. Now, the conveyor belt does not work like it's supposed to in real life. Yes, it pushes things forward, but have you ever thought about rotating it? And how would I implement that in this building system I had just spent a lot of time on? Well, I said screw realism, and just made the log on it jump to the center of the collision's mass if the conveyor belt faces a different direction. I guess that works for now, but it's still a bit weird. So, now we have automation. But the physics of the logs lagged the game for a while. I thought of a solution for this: The Log Holder. So I made the model for it, which now that I think, looks kind of ridiculous. The way it works (which once again - doesn't work in real life) is by sucking the logs in itself, breaking it to bits. It's pretty fun to think about this stuff.
So yeah, this is when I started to have a bit more fun - I added a day/night cycle into this woodcutting, lumberfarming, industry-building type of game, which looks cool I guess, but does not actually have an effect. Actually, the only effect it had is on lighting, which at night was barely existing. So then I made the campfire, so that the player could see something at night. I also added a neat option to skip the day or night. After that, I realized, that the early-game sucked if you didn't use admin cheats (which I did for debugging). So I made a few more forests, and hid some crates in it. I guess later I could make something more interesting to this, but it works for now. These crates give the player a bit of wood and gold (yes, this is the only way to obtain gold as of now).
Aaaaaaand that's where I'm currently at. I have a lot of fun making this game, writing this devlog, and I hope I could find some success with it. Anyways thanks for reading. = )
